19.Thomas Garret lost his entire fortune in his battle against slavery.He was sued by a Maryland slave owner and fined for aiding a black family in flight.Over his lifetime,Garrett reportedly helped more than 2,000fugitive(逃亡的,无常的)slaves move through Delaware,an important stop on the Underground Railroad.

波所黎各南滨加勒比海,在战略上拥有十分重要的意义。它是始建于15世纪一直到19世纪才竣工的庞大防御工事,目的是为了保护其领土。赫圣胡安历史遗址是融合欧洲军事建筑风格,并结合美国大陆港口实际情况而建造的典型军事建筑群。

圣胡安历史遗址位于大西洋中西印度群岛的边缘,地理位置极为重要。它建于1511年,建成后不久,西班牙人就决定将波所黎各岛作为保护西南印度和帝国的军事基地。1533年在港口旁边建筑了“福塔莱萨”,1539年在这个岛的西部尖角位置和北部的岸边分别建筑了埃尔莫罗要塞和圣克里斯托瓦尔要塞。这个防御体系在后来的四个世纪中不断得到加强。这个要塞和喀他赫纳要塞在整个“新世界”中都给人留下了极为深刻的印象。

这个要塞也是饱经风雨。16世纪末曾被英国人和法国人攻占,1625年被荷兰人付之一炬。1630到1660年之间要塞得以重建,重建后的要塞外面增加了一道城墙。在1756—1763年的“七年战争”后的军事改革中,西班牙国王查理三世将圣胡安要塞视为“第一梯队的防御阵地”。要塞的城墙重修并加固,两个要塞之间的城墙得到了延长,把整个城市包围起来。
