Reading Chinese Philosophy at SixOne day afternoon in early 2007， by appointment， I entered an elegantoffice in the Beijing International Club. Amid its pleasant atmosphere，I interviewed Dr. Dana Schuppert on many topics， from her favoriteplaces （Yunnan and Sichuan）； to Lao Zi （Lao Tzu， circa 600-50BC）， Confucius and Sun Zi （Sun Tzu）； from “reading thousands ofbooks” to “traveling thousands of miles”； from her love for Chineseclassical poetry to her view of life. Her true love for China was evidentin every word， as she recited the verses from Li Bai’s poem： “Froma pot of wine among the flowers I drank alone. Dana Schuppert is a European lady， with the mixed blue blood of Germanyand France. She has lived in China for many years. She is notonly an investor， banker and strategist， but also a talented woman withthe romance of the French， the precision of the German and the toleranceof the Chinese. From our talk， I learned that she grew up in Europe. Her fatherwas a famous medical scientist who was very familiar with thecultures of China and India. Her mother came from a noble Frenchfamily， and was interested in Chinese art. When talking about herfamily background， Dana said proudly， “I am very lucky because Iam probably the most perfect ‘combination’ in the world. I had greatinfluence from my parents， and that has shaped my lifestyle since mychildhood.” In regard to her nationality， she answered， “I am a Europeanwith German nationality， and a background in both Germany andFrance. Europe was my most important background before I came toChina. Favorable living conditions provided Dana with free space for development，but she has “a Chinese heart”。 When she was six years old，she started to read Chinese philosophy in her father’s study， becamefamiliar with Chinese wisdom and art， and was deeply attracted by thismysterious nation. “I must go to this country one day，” she said to herfather， who was shocked by her idea. Many years later， she finally settleddown in China， and made her childhood dream come true.
Dr. Dana Schuppert has a strong academic background with amaster’s degree from Paris University and two doctoral degrees in Hu28man Science and Economics from University of Bonn. Established bythe Prussian King William III in 1818， University of Bonn is one ofthe most famous universities in Germany， where Dana worked for fiveyears as an associate professor. Thereafter， she began to get involvedin the investment banking industry， focusing on economic and politicalcommunications between Germany and France. She came to Asiain 1992 and has so far worked and lived in Asian countries like Japan，China， India and Singapore for 15 years.
In 1992， Dr. Dana Schuppert came from Japan to Beijing on abusiness trip. When she stepped out of the Beijing Capital InternationalAirport， she suddenly felt a familiar smell brushing her face. Recallingthat feeling， she said， “I don’t know why， but I cannot describeit in words. It made me so comfortable， just like going back home！” Itwas this feeling which awakened her childhood memory of China andher strong attraction to Chinese philosophy， art， pottery and wisdom，and enabled her to make an important decision — China would be thecountry where she would live for the rest of her life！
